Overall, this experience has been so rewarding and I'm so thankful for it. I've grown so much as a teacher and have been able to learn so much from so many different people.
Collaboration, leadership, and professionalism
- Working on this project has allowed me to be professional. To gather the interviews and the material that needs to be on this website, I've had to communicate with teachers, be on time for on-sites, and be able to give this presentation.
- Along with being professional, it has allowed for a plethora of opportunities for collaboration. I've had to collaborate with the teacher in the classroom I was placed in. I've had to collaborate and work with the other scholars who were at my onsite as well. I've also had to collaborate with my reflective lead and liaison.
Cultural Competency
Identity, awareness, humility and impact
- This experience has shown me how important it is for students to love themselves. I had a lot of experiences with students who were talking down about themselves and it was so disheartening. It's so important for students to love who they are.
- My teacher Instagram has enabled me to explore who I am and share it with the world. I posted about my traits, issues in education that are important to me, events that influenced me as a learner, and certain things that inspired me to become a teacher.
Civic Engagement
Community based learning, research, and service
- Researching the community map opened my eyes up to the resources available for the school and the community it serves.
- The research wonderings allow me to conduct research and better form my teacher persona and what I am interested in for my classroom.
Grit and Growth Mindset
Feedback, reflection and being a lifelong learner
- Being a teacher is hard. During my on-sites, I experienced many moments where I felt defeated but I persevered and I learned so much. I kept a positive attitude, took feedback and applied it, and was flexible with each new day.
Instructional Best Practices
Personalized learning, social and emotional skills, and student engagement
- I had to individualize my teaching to each student. Some students were ahead but some needed more support. Not all kids learn the same so I had to have a lot of strategies in my teacher tool belt.
- There were a lot of opportunities to implement social and emotional learning. There were several moments where I was able to handle conflicts between students and de-escalate them. I was able to pull the child aside, get on their level, and understand how they were feeling, how we can move on from it and how we can deal with our feelings.
- I was able to lead small groups and practice keeping students engaged. I used some methods such as ready position, having students come up to the board and explain their answer, and breaking down vocabulary with them.
Overall, this experience has been so rewarding and I'm so thankful for it. I've grown so much as a teacher and have been able to learn so much from so many different people.
